Vera Kielsky-Greenwood
nee Landshut Beslin, Germany 1928 |
Mrs. Vera Greenwood is an elegant, well-spoken lady who can discuss her experiences during WWII in Germany, Palestine, and in the newly formed State of Israel. Though her family had been affluent and privileged in Germany, the new laws imposed by the Nazis impeded her father’s ability to continue supporting his family. After their home was invaded by Nazi soldiers, Mr. Landshut decided to escape Germany and move to the Holy Land. His foresight saved Vera and her parents, and set them on an adventure they could never have envisioned. Mrs. Greenwood imparts a tale of the War years from the broad perspective of someone who suffered under the Nazis, escaped Europe, joined the Haganah to fight the British, joined the Israeli Defense Forces to defend against the Arabs, and bared witness as a worthless piece of dusty land was transformed into a beautiful and thriving Jewish State.
